The World in One City, a Study of Interculturalism in London
This project is a study of interculturalism in London. I chose the term “interculturalism” rather than “multiculturalism” as it suggests the idea of various communities meeting and exchanging.
For this project I photographed people from every countries and territories participating in the Olympic Games. At the time (2004/5) there were 202 nations on this list. I photographed all my “models” with a Polaroid camera and each of them had to hold the image of the previous person photographed, creating an uninterrupted chain.
The final image is made up of these portraits: 202 people, from 202 different parts of the world, in London. This project is a visual and conceptual exercise. I did not ask people for ID. I was also obliged to “cheat” for five of the 202 people photographed, as they are not from the country they represent but only have a remote link to it (has worked there, has family there…).
Le Monde dans une Ville, étude du communautarisme à Londres
Ce projet est une étude du communautarisme à Londres (en anglais il existe plusieurs mots pour le communautarisme et la relation qui existe entre les différentes communautés : ‘multiculturalisme’ est le mot le plus courant, faisant référence au nombre de communautés différentes dans une même ville. Interculturalisme est une référence aux endroits où ces communautés se croisent et échangent. C’est le mot que j’ai choisi pour ce projet dans sa version originale, en anglais).
Pour ce projet j’ai photographié une personne de chaque pays et territoires qui participent aux Jeux Olympiques. Au moment de la réalisation du projet il y avait 202 pays/nations sur cette liste. J’ai photographié tous mes ‘modèles’ avec un appareil instantané de type Polaroid, chacun des modèles tenant la photo de la personne précedante, créant ainsi une chaîne ininterrompue.
L’image finale est composée de 202 portraits de personnes de 202 pays différents, à Londres.
